Year In Year Out – My Favorite End Of Year Reflection

Summary: In this post, I’m sharing my favorite exercise to reflect on the last year with just a few questions. It’s called ‘Year In Year Out’ end of year reflection. All you need is a pen and paper or download a template here.

The year is slowly coming to an end and before I start thinking about new goals or resolutions for the new year, I like to reflect on the old. Today I would like to introduce you to one of my favorite exercises: The ‘Year In Year Out’ end-of-year reflection.

How does the end of year reflection work?

All you need is a pen and paper and some time. First, you need to draw three circles or download the template here. Afterward, you start from the very outside and move forward circle after circle answering the questions one after the other. The idea is to write the answer within the circles.

What are the questions?

Surrounding the circles you answer the following first question:

What happened in the world that touched you?

In the first circles you focus on your personal life:

What happened in your personal life?

You can think in all directions here. You can write down events, but also dig deeper. For example, what are you proud of? What have you learned? What would you have liked to have had more time for?

The next level is about feelings. When you look at your answers from the first and second questions:

How did you feel?

Happy? Sad? Angry? Tired? Relaxed? Try to be honest with yourself.

The inner circle summarizes everything. Look again at your answers to the previous three questions:

Looking back, what was the motto for the past year?

Again, be honest with yourself. It doesn’t matter if the motto reflects what you had planned in January. It’s just to give you a sense of what the year was like for you, what happened, and what feelings were prevalent.

And now?

After you have completed the exercise, let the reflections sink in. You may already have ideas about what you want to change next year. Stay tuned for part 2 of the end-of-year reflection ritual.
